Local Flavor. That's not just the title of the
new CD by Borrowed Tunes, it's also the name of an Austin,Texas-based record
store, entirely devoted to Austin artists. It's
through this wonderful store that Klaus Patzak & Axel Ludwig of Borrowed
Tunes and Phil
Hurd, an Austin-based singer-songwriter/guitarist met. Through their
mutual friendship with Local Flavor owners Mike and Sue Donahoe, these
three arranged to perform together for Borrowed Tunes' set at the 1997
Austin Acoustic Music Festival, held in November 1997. Rehearsing was done
via cassette tapes in the mail, and the trio only met a few short
days before the festival. In fact, after only one evening of rehearsal
Klaus and Phil performed live on a KUT FM radio
broadcast !
The set at the festival
was great, and greeted with much enthusiasm. The response was so good Borrowed
Tunes was asked to perform two further shows, both in the following week!
One was a songwriter's showcase held at a local Austin club, and the other
was at the historic Gruene Hall located near New Braunfels, Texas. The
Gruene Hall served as a career launching point for Willie Nelson, George
Strait and others, and Borrowed Tunes performed in front of a photo gallery
of these legends.
The shows and the response
got Klaus, Axel and Phil to thinking about recording the numbers they had
been performing to document the experience. As there was no time to book
studio time, a makeshift studio was setup in a friend's living room in
Austin, using Phil's Tascam 424 4-track cassette recorder. The results
of this session are the songs featured on the new CD
"Local Flavor". The great vibe that was ever-present
during their time together is captured perfectly here!
